Motto for life
In life following the rules doesn't always mean it's the right thing to do. Following your heart is always the best policy in life, becuase then you'll always be right. In the short story “The Hundredth Dove” by Jane Yolen, Hugh always follows his King no matter the situation and never lets his heart lead his desisions.
The mode of literature for this story is a tragedy. This plotline starts with the world in conflict when the King and Queen disagree about killing of doves for the wedding. The rise to power in this story, is when Hugh catches his first load of birds, giving him the confidence to catch more. Hugh’s Tragic flaw is that he is a one-dimensional character that cannot think independently and only follows the king’s commands. He does not follow his heart when he is presented with the choice to free the dove or to capture it. The dove challenged Hugh to think independently and he could not handle the thought of not completing the king’s orders so he killed the dove. At the end of the story, there was never a wedding, and Hugh never hunted for birds again, symbolizing the death of his old life.
The decision not to let the dove go was the wrong decision, his narrow mindedness cost the king his marriage. Hugh’s inability to think independently and with his heart ended in tragedy.
The Assassins assistant
I had been friends with John ever science we were little children and I always looked up to him and followed him. We both grew up and lived Bel air, Maryland and I always enjoyed having in his company (Otfinoski). After our childhood we both persued different careers, Booth became an actor and I became a Bartender(Biography of John Wilkes Booth). Even after childhood we kept in touch writng each other from time to time until one day he asked me to do him a special favor.
In 1850, my friend John had become politcally active, it changed his entire deminer and became a whole new person. He sent me a note in 1865 that changed my life forever. I support the south like John, but he supports the south like no one I’ve ever seen before. John had asked me, to help him kidnap the president when he is in Washington D.C(Otfinoski). I was shocked that the man I knew all my life would go to the extreme to give the south aadvantage with the south slowly losing the battle. Never in my life have I had to make a tougher decision, in I decided I must help my best friend.
When I finally arrived in D.C I saw the man that I had not seen in over 13 years, my best friend John Wilkes Booth. The plan was simple, the president was going to be making a speech at exactly twelve noon. From the time he moves from his office to the he gets to the front door we will have me and John throw a hay sack over him and drag him out the back exit. We set up for the kindnaping and the clock struck noon and nothing happened, the president had cancled the speech(Otfinoski). John took the faliure very hard; I had never seen such rage from him in my life. At that moment I heard under his breath his oath to kill the president.
After our failed attempt on killing the president John devised a plan to kill the president that was fool proof; and we carried it out as planned. First, the was going to see the play Our American Cousin , during the last scene before intermission John would sneak into the presidents box and assasinate him from point blank range(Otfinoski). Once the president is dead he would jump out of ther box and slide down the curtain droping him to the main stage, were he would exit out the back were I would have the horse ready to go and we would ride away. On the night of April 14, 1865 John and I carried out the plan to perfection, we were now fugatives of the law(Otfinoski).
As we traveled farther and farther away from the scence I felt like something was wrong, we were being followed. The Union soliders were tracking us down, but they didn’t catch us until 12 days later at Mr.Garnetts barn. When we knew that they had arrived we hid in the barn hoping they would leave, but they didn’t. They threatened us to come out or be shot. John replied. “Never, you’re going to have to burn us alive!” So they set the barn on fire trying to burn us out, soon after I found a back door to exit out of and I called to John. “John this way I’ve found an exit.” John replied “ No, this must end now.” He walked out the front of the barn and through the flames as I escaped out the back. Once I was about ten steps out of the barn I herd gunshots and I knew that my dearest friend John had died. Every other event that ever happened throughout my life time could never compare, to the assination of the president by John wilkes Booth.
