MJ or the King?

The NBA is one of the most action packed leagues in the world, with last second buzzer beaters, amazing dunks, and the occasional half court heave that drops. Many players have dominated this league, from Kareem Abdul- Jabbar to Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Although these players were All-time greats and Hall of famers, no one quite dominated the game like Michael Jeffery Jordan. Michael was an outstanding player who could put the team on his back and carry them to victory. Scottie Pippen was another All-time great and played right by Jordan’s side. Together they won six titles in two three peats from 91 to 93 and from 96 to 98 (Turner Sports, 2011). Scottie was Jordan’s most trusted teammate, but recently Scottie made a remark that Lebron James is better than his former teammate. Who is the better player, MJ or the King?

Michael Jeffery Jordan was born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. He attended North Carolina for college and was selected third overall in the 1984 NBA draft. Michael averaged 30.1 points per game during in his 15-year career, with a top season average of 37.1 in the 86-87 season (Sports Reference LLC, 2011). He was a five time NBA regular season MVP and a six time Finals MVP winning it every time the Bulls made it to the Finals. Although he won an unprecedented six titles he could have won at least two more if he had not quit basketball to play baseball in the 93-94 season. In 2009,m Jordan was elected into the basketball Hall of fame on his first ballot and will be forever remembered for his high flying dunks and his spectacular performances.

Lebron James took a slightly different approach to stardom. He was born on December 30, 1984, the same year Jordan made his NBA debut. James was born into a poor family who moved constantly around his hometown of Akron, Ohio. Due to the constant moving Lebron rarely made friends, and even if he did, he never played with them because he was embarrassed of his home life. His outlet for his emotions was basketball, from a young age Lebron always enjoyed playing basketball. When James was old enough to attend high school he went to Saint Vincent-Saint Mary where his friends attended and won three high school state titles. After high school, James opted to skip collage and head straight for the pros, selected number one overall by his hometown team the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2003 NBA draft. In Cleveland James won back to back NBA MVP’s and lead the Cavaliers to the 2006 finals were they lost to the Spurs (Sports Reference LLC, 2011). Then in 2010 James became a free agent and left the town of Cleveland for the Miami Heat, and now has helped the team reach the finals. Although his career average is only 27.7 points per game and he doesn’t have a championship, can the King be better than Michael Jordan?

Both Lebron and Michael have had fantastic Hall of fame and future Hall of fame careers, but which is the better player. Lebron James may be one of the best players of all time but the way he left Cleveland has tarnished his reputation. Lebron has played 7 years in the league and has not won a single NBA title where Jordan already had one title at that point in his career. Overall, Jordan is the better player because not only did he have a better scoring average than Lebron, he has more championships, MVP’s, and All-Star appearances. Although Lebron is one of the best players of our generation, he has a long way to go before surpassing Michael Jordan.

Motto for life

In the short story “The Hundredth Dove” by Jane Yolen, the king gives his royal folwer Hugh the mission to catch 100 doves for his wedding. He caught 99 birds but the last dove had escaped from his net five times. When he finally caught the 100th dove, the dove pleaded with Hugh to let it go. The dove promised Hugh riches and endless love from the queen if released. Hugh is not persuaded by the dove’s pleading and snaps its neck. By killing, the dove he killed actually killed the queen.

The mode of literature for this story is a tragedy. This plotline starts with the world in conflict when the King and Queen disagree about killing of doves for the wedding. The rise to power in this story, is when Hugh catches his first load of birds, giving him the confidence to catch more. Hugh’s Tragic flaw is that he is a one-dimensional character that cannot think independently and only follows the king’s commands. He does not follow his heart when he is presented with the choice to free the dove or to capture it. The dove challenged Hugh to think independently and he could not handle the thought of not completing the king’s orders so he killed the dove. At the end of the story, there was never a wedding, and Hugh never hunted for birds again, symbolizing the death of his old life.

The decision not to let the dove go was the wrong decision, his narrow mindedness cost the king his marriage. Hugh’s inability to think independently and with his heart ended in tragedy.

Leaking

Drip,Drip, Drip, the calling of the broken sink. With little tiny cries calling.

Help Me,
Save Me,
Fix me,

The shear plop of each drop exploding as they hit the bottom of the sink drives you crazier with each second that passes by.

Why, Why must you drive me to the point of insanity?

Just,
Fix,
Me, it cries

And yet I have no intent on fixing this problem anytime soon.

The year was 2081........

The year was 2081, at last the end of the world had come. Human drones have taken over the world and sent it into a spiraling descent of pure chaos. They enslaved every human and required them to work in mine to harness the power to keep the drones alive. If anyone even dared to step out of line while working you were instantly vaporized to pulp. How did it come to this? How could we have prevented it? Are question commonly asked among the enslaved humans. The year is 2081, and world will never be the same.

2011 Daytona 500

This past weekend history was made at the Daytona 500, with Trevor Bayne and age 20 became the youngest driver to win the 500. Trevor driving the number 21 car for the storied Wood brother’s team brought a trophy home for the first time since Elliot Sadler won in Bristol in 2001. The race this year also set records for most lead changes at 74, and cautions at 16. There is no doubt that this Daytona 500 will go down as one of the craziest of all time.

World Champions

As confetti rains down from the heavens like rain that falls when the angels cry, you know something special has occurred. The football game has just ended, but this is no ordinary football game. This is Super bowl XLV, the biggest game of the year detmirning a champion of the National football league. With the Green Bay Packers winning it all and bringing the championship home to where it started, Title town.

This is the Packers fourth Super bowl victory with wins in 1966, 1967, 1996, and 2010. The total puts them in fourth place in the number of super bowl victories; only behind the San Francisco 49ers with five, Dallas Cowboys with five, and the Pittsburgh Steelers with Six.

Super Bowl XLV featured the two oldest and most storied franchises in the NFL, the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. For this classic matchup defense was the name of the game. Ultimately, the Packers won due to their three take always, all leading to Packers touchdowns. One of these turnovers was an interception by Packers safety Nick Collins that was returned 40 yards for a touchdown. Other turnovers included an interception by Jared Bush, and a fumble recovery by Desmond Bishop.

With the Super bowl win, the trophy comes back to where it originally started, Green Bay Wisconsin. The Packers overcame adversity, with many injuries to key players making it hard to stay consistent on either side of the ball. Even through these struggles, they still came out with a successful season. Taking the long way to the super bowl with the sixth seed in the playoffs. There are 32 teams in the NFL and there can only be one champion, that title rightfully belongs to the Green Bay Packers.

Champion

In a lifetime, someone will tell you that you cannot do something, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. All my life I’ve been told I can’t, but I did. They told me I would never get adopted with my background, but I did. I was told I would never live to see the age of 20 associating with the gangs, but I did. When I went pro in boxing they said I was going to be the best ever, better than Pacquiao, Ali/Clay, Balboa, and Mayweather combined. Then after just one loss it was all over, broken rib, cracked skull, six broken teeth, and a enormous amount of blood. It was a true beat down; I thought I was never going to fight again. People were telling me I should play it safe and not risk another beating, but did playing it safe get us to the moon? Then why should I?

It took me a full decade to recover from the injuries, not a day went by that I didn't wish I was in the ring fighting for the title. Boxing has changed since I left, there’s a new hotshot, that everybody thinks is the next superstar. Perry Jones IV, undefeated with a record of 12-0 with nine KO’s. I knew a comeback would be tough, but I never imagined it like this.

In a lifetime, how many people can hate you? Is it my personality, my determination, my stupidity? All I want is to be a champion. With the fight set up, I am starting to doubt myself and my abilities. I almost died once, why try again?

The night had finally come, the time to finally prove that I wasn’t a waste of a life and prove I am a champion. As I walked into the ring the negative comments poured in louder than I had ever heard before. The bell rung and the match had started andf time had stopped and the world ceased to exist expect me and him. Only one would walk away as a champion.

He came out firing giving me everthing I could handle. The he started to slow down and I took advantage of the oppertunity. After I had given him a couple of nice punches to the gut he made the worst decision of his life.

“Old man you have game, but you’re washed up, nothing left in the tank, you’re just an obsessed old man who thinks he is the best but has nothing left.” Perry said.

Those words tasted like puke in my mouth, I wanted to prove him wrong; and I did. At that instant Ithrew the punch, like no other punch I had ever thrown. It was headed to impact the side of his head he tried to block it, but he was too late. He fell to the floor lights out, game over. I was finally a champion.

In a lifetime how many people can you prove wrong? If I would have given up on my dream, would I even be alive today? No matter how tough the road gets, you must preserver. Although you may fail at first, try, and try again until you are a champion.
